1 Context & Research

U5 1.1 – Analyse the requirements and parameters of a 2 dimensional problem in art and design.

U5 1.2 – Apply research activities to support solutions to a 2 dimensional problem in art and design.

U2 1.1 – Critically compare a range of research tools, methods and skills.

U2 2.1 – Critically compare a range of primary and secondary research sources.

U2 3.1 – Apply research tools to record, interpret and develop ideas.

Starting with a quick breakdown of the brief is a great habit to get into.

Coherent and accurate analysis of college logos.

Your logo research is very broad, showing an outstanding and substantial use of analysis. The only improvement you could have made would be to mention how you could use your research to influence your designs.

Including an image to support your history of the apple logo would’ve been useful however it is good to see some contextual research in your assignment anyway.

Useful interview questions but in future come up with more questions from your client.

Adding fonts and a colour palette to your mood board is clever and helps focus your ideas later on. Well done.

Detailed and coherent mind map.

Skillful artist research but try to back up your statements with images of the artist’s work rather than links to it. Your comments on what you would use from their work is good and what you should’ve done in the logo analysis stage as well.

2 Planning, Problem Solving, Skills & Design

U5 2.1 – Demonstrate the ability to plan, organise and prepare solutions to a 2 dimensional problem in art and design.

U5 2.2 – Apply practical skills, understanding and methods to solve 2 dimensional problems in art and design.

U4 1.1 – Critically compare a range of materials and processes.

U4 1.2 – Apply understanding of materials and processes.

U4 1.3 – Apply understanding of technical skills.

Extensive and mature detail in your logo design stage. The detail and reasoning you have included are complex and useful. Your designs themselves show a good command of drawing skills. I can clearly see your journey through the design stages.

Your experimentation with your developed ideas are great. They show an accomplished use of Photoshop, Illustrator and After effects.

Using a comparison of the before and after of the moodle page is sophisticated.

3 Evaluation & Reflection

U5 3.1 – Analyse the effectiveness of solutions to 2 dimensional problems in art and design.

U2 1.1 – Critically compare a range of research tools, methods and skills.

U2 2.1 – Critically compare a range of primary and secondary research sources.

U2 3.1 – Apply research tools to record, interpret and develop ideas.

U2 3.2 – Evaluate the effectiveness of research tools to develop ideas.

U4 1.4 – Evaluate the use of materials, processes and technical skills.

Good referencing, to make them perfect check double check alphabetizing, spacing and any left-over dots or subheadings.

An excellent evaluation. Very detailed and sophisticated reflections. Take care to remove all subheadings and questions in future.

Unit 5: Evaluation

I feel that my secondary research sources were very appropriate for the unit I have just finished as all of my research related to something within IT or logo design it never strayed from my main topic of IT related subjects and so I feel that I did well in keeping my research appropriate for the unit. I felt that my research was good but I feel that there could have been more research done into more complex logo designs as well as research on other college logos to compare against the current and old college logo , I feel that this would have given me more ideas to draw for a college logo. Reflecting upon my research and having said that I thought that there could have been more I think I did well with what I did do for my research. The context of my unit affected my unit in a good way because my research could be easily found and I could find lots on things such as already existing logos and IT related logos so the context of my unit helped me a lot with my research. I am quite happy with my research sources/tools so I don’t think I’d change anything about using them in my next assignment.

Looking at my logos overall I think that they are suitable for my course area (IT). I tried to keep my logo’s style similar (shading wise as well as overall look)  but I think that they didn’t really stay consistent in style that much but I liked the designs of each of my logo and I felt that they fitted my course area well. In proportion to the rest of my unit I feel that my logos were well designed and I’m happy that I did a few initial designs and then changed some of my logos going into the developed logos because now looking at my finished logos I feel that they look a ton better than the original initial sketches I did so overall I think in proportion to the rest of my unit I think they look good. In the beginning the colour scheme I originally had was all over the place and had no consistency at all so I thought about my colour scheme and changed it to an all blue colour scheme with the additions of a variety of grey tones and a few shades of green. The texture I used (screen texture) is a hand made texture that I learned from a tutorial I found a few years ago.

Looking at the legibility of the fonts I chose for my logos/banners the fonts are clear and easy to read. The style of the fonts I’ve chosen are thin so that they look like they have a computerized effect to them. I think the fonts I’ve chosen are fit for their purpose and they are easily readable and are comfortable to look at.

Looking at the layout of my logos I think the arrangement  of the objects within my logos are good I also think their alignment are good apart from two logos that don’t fill the entire square of the logo size. The colours work well together because they’re mostly tones of blue and grey with hints of green. I also think their is good harmony between the colours used within each logo and I think there is balance between the objects within the logo apart from two that don’t really fit within the size of the of the logo.

Target Audience
Is your work fit for your audience, does it meet the brief, is the language appropriate, does it communicate effectively, is it age/sex/age/race appropriate, how does the context affect it.

My logo’s fit my target audience of 19+ because I think that they look modern and interesting to look at, also the colours all work together and aren’t inconsistent which I feel would draw my target audience in more because they would look at the logos and not be distracted by their mis-mash colour scheme. I also feel that the font I have chosen for my logos/banners are appropriate because the fonts can be easily read and are visible. My logos are age/sex/age and race appropriate. The context of the course area affects my logos in a positive way because there’s a lot of ideas to be presented when thinking of designing logos for an IT course area.

I chose to use digital media because I felt that if I did these traditionally they wouldn’t have come out as well as they have done on a digital software, also I was asked by my client to use illustrator and because I hadn’t used illustrator  a tiny bit in previous lessons I took this opportunity to learn the software which would help me in my future assignments. I learned a lot during this particular assignment because as mentioned above I had only used Illustrator a tiny bit so I didn’t really have any knowledge in the software so after getting Illustrator at home I make it a small goal of mine to teach myself the software a lot more so that I could actually use it and I achieved my small goal so now I’m more confident in using Illustrator. Looking at my use of line I felt that my lines were good and consistent I felt that maybe I should have used line weight in some of my logos to add some variety to my lines. Looking at the tone within my logo’s I think that the colours work well together (logo colour schemes mostly consist of blues & grey’s) so having a slightly limited colour palette works well I think as before I narrowed down my colour palette, it was all over the place and had little to no consistancy and I felt that it needed consistancy so that’s why I changed it to blue/grey tones because blue means dependiblity/trust and black/grey means mature/dependable also I thought the blue/grey colour scheme was computer related colours. Looking at shape and texture within my logo’s there wasn’t any textures used within my logos and the shapes within my logos are simple and easy to see.

As an overall conclusion I’m really happy with how my designs turned out in the end because I feel that when I look at them now they look a lot better now than they did in the beginning, I think moving forward I will  try to keep all my logos similar in style as I feel a few of the logos don’t look the same style wise. I felt I could have used my time more efficiently as for a while I didn’t have access to Illustrator at home so I think that if I’d got it earlier I  could have got my logos done earlier but other than that I felt I used my time effectively.  There were no safety concerns for this unit.

Unit 5: Developed logo idea’s and developed banner idea’s.

logo 5- BTEC for IT users

BTEC  diploma for IT users- I developed this logo by changing it completely from it’s original designs, for this developed logo I drew a disk with a sticky note on it which had “BTEC diploma for IT users” on it I then coloured the background a pale blue.

logo 2

Level 2 diploma in IT PC maintenance- This logo got developed further from the original as it got coloured and I changed the shape of the fan blades on the fan.

logo 3- Higher Education in computing and system modelling.

Higher education: Computing & systems modelling- I developed this logo further by colouring it green and then adding text to the different symbols.

logo 7- Microsoft digital literacy

Microsoft digital literacy- I developed this logo further by drawing a book and colouring it blue and then adding the Microsoft logo on one of the pages of the book.

logo 6- subsidiary diploma in IT

Level 3 subsidiary diploma in IT- I developed this idea by colouring it blue and pale grey I also added text to the certificate.

logo 4- Level 2 Information technology

Level 3 Information technology- I changed this logo completely from the original  I tried to make this logo look like an app so I drew a graphics tablet pen as the I half a CD as the C and some memory sticks (that look like circuit boards) as the T. I coloured the background blue and added some darker blue to the background to make it look like a gradient.

logo 8

Level 2 Information & creative technology- I changed this logo completely from the original I drew a globe and drew the globe connect to USB cables I then put information technology around the edge of  the globe. I then coloured the inside  of the globe blue and dark blue and coloured the wires light and dark grey. I then put white text around the outside of the globe.

Developed banner designs

ICT banner 2

Design 1- For this design I developed it by adding a glow around the edge of the screen texture I also added a glow to the white text.

ICT BANNER 3.png

Design 2- For this design I developed it by adding some glow to the text and added some wavy glitch lines to the banner to add more of a glitch effect to the banner.

ICT BANNER 1.png

Design 3- For this idea I developed it by adding a blue screen error message in the background and then added a bigger glow to the screen texture to make it look more like a screen I also added in some faded out error words in the background.

ICT BANNER 4

Design 4- For this idea I developed it by adding a circuit board chip and some little capacitors and a few inductors I thought if I added these bits to it maybe it would look better and less bland that what it did originally but when I looked at it again I thought it was still quite bland so I still don’t like it that much which is probably why I never went ahead and made it my final banner design.

ICT BANNER 5.png

Design 5-I developed this idea by adding a glow to the “Welcome to Information technology” text as well as the letters on the keyboard. I also added in a screen texture and put a faded glow around it to make it look better and less plain.

Unit 5: logo design: small logo designs and banner designs.

logo designs smallBTEC diploma for IT users:(ORANGE)
Design 1: BTEC diploma for IT users-  I first drew this idea of a computer monitor, mouse and keyboard as I thought that it would fit in with the course because I thought that the students would obviously use a computer at some point within their course  and all students know what a computer looks like so I thought that logo design would help to make it easy to recognize in a row of other logo’s and be obvious to the student what their course logo is.

Design 2: BTEC diploma for IT users- I drew a second logo idea so that I could chose the one I wanted to do for this one it didn’t really change much from the first idea but I added in some CD’s on the desk also in the little sketch I did I changed the placement of some of the objects, rather than them being close together I drew them apart a bit more.

Level 2 in IT PC maintenance: (RED)
Design 1: Level 2 in IT PC maintenance- I drew this design of the inside of a computer because I felt that it fit the course (which I assume involves fixing computers) that my logo design was showing. I thought that if I tried to make the logo relate more to the course it would be easy for the student to find their course, In the end I kept this design as my final logo design.

Design 2: Level 2 in IT PC maintenance- I drew a computer tower on a table with a screwdriver on the side to make it look like the tower was being fixed. I liked this idea but stayed with idea 1 because I preferred the first idea and thought it was more fitting than the second idea I came up with.

Higher Education: Computing & Systems modelling. (YELLOW)
Design 1: Higher Education:  computing and systems modelling- I drew a circuit diagram as a design idea because I thought it was a good idea to draw some form of diagram because when I searched for system modelling it looked like a flow chart which sort of looks like a circuit diagram. I thougt that the circuit diagram would help to make the course recognizable when put in a crowd of other logo’s.

Design 2: Higher Education: computing and systems modelling- similar to the logo’s I sketched out for the BTEC diploma for IT users with the computer monitor and mouse only this time I drew a hard-drive on the desk. I chose the first idea because I felt that this one I had drawn looked too identical to the BTEC diploma for IT users logo designs.

Microsoft digital literacy: (GREEN)
Design 1: I drew a small word document and put the words “Microsoft digital literacy” in the document page and then put a little side bar with a capital A in the box . I thought that if I drew the Microsoft Word user interface and put what the course was called in the document then it would help students to easily know what the course was they chose to study. Although I thought that it would be too big to draw in such a small canvas size , also I didn’t really like it as a logo design so I came up with a second design.

Design 2: For the second design I drew out the Microsoft logo and then put the company name next to the logo and wrote “digital literacy” underneath with a mouse clicking it. I didn’t like this logo design because I thought it was too plain and not very interesting to look at whilst it would have done it’s job of being a recognizable course logo I don’t think it would have been an interesting logo to look at so I eventually came up with an idea that I ended up using for my final idea.

BTEC level 3 Subsidary diploma in IT- (BLUE)
Design 1: I drew a computer screen with some files on it, I drew out three files and put “subsidiary diploma in IT” on it with a mouse clicking on it. I didn’t like this because I thought it was too plain and boring to look at, also I thought it was too identical to the orignial logo the page had on it so I decided to not use this idea and drew another one.

Design 2: For this idea I drew  a certificate pinned to a notice board, I didn’t like this idea because I thought that it didn’t make sense as why would you pin your course certificate to a board to make holes in the corners and ruin the certificate which you will need for future jobs etc so I scrapped this idea a little and recycled it to make a new idea which ended up being my final idea.

Level 3 information technology- (PURPLE)
Design 1: For this idea I drew some coding with the words “title: Information Technology” in between the coding I drew. I didn’t choose this design because I thought it was too plain and looked a little boring so I didn’t use this design and thought of another idea.

Design 2: I drew a Circuit board with the letters I and T made up of USB cables, I didn’t use this idea because I thought it was too plain and it looked a little boring so I came up with a new idea that I used instead.

Level 2 information and creative technology- (PINK)
Design 1: I drew an open leaflet with the words “Level 3 information & creative technology” on it I didn’t use this idea because I thought that it didn’t make sense nor did it fit into my theme of IT so I didn’t use it for those reasons, instead I thought up another idea to see if I could use that.

Design 2: I drew a loading sign with loading going around the edge of the loading sign. I then put the words “Level 3: information technology” but what I meant to put in it was BTEC level 2 Information & creative technology. In the end I didn’t choose this idea because I thought it looked uninteresting to look at and a little boring too that’s why I didn’t use this idea instead I came up with a new idea that made more sense and I used this idea as my developed idea.

IMG_0340
Banner designs
Design 1:- For this idea I drew some computer screen lines and wrote “Welcome to: Information & communication technology. I had the idea of making a computer screen effect and adding a glow around the edges and using white text to make it look better, I didn’t use this idea because I thought it was too bland and I thought that as a banner it would have looked boring.

Design 2:- For this banner design I drew some coding and and put the words “Title: Welcome to Information & communication technology” I then drew in some glitches to the piece to make it look like the banner was glitching a lot. I didn’t use this idea because I thought it would have been a  plain banner to look at and I couldn’t think of how I could later develop it to make it more interesting.

Design: 3- For this idea I first wrote the words “Welcome to: information & communication technology” I then added in glitch effects and shaded around the area of the words to make it look like it was coloured in. I used this idea because I instantly liked this idea and instantly came up with an idea on how I could improve it so I went with this idea as my chosen banner design I still did two other designs in case I changed my mind about it.

Design: 4- For this idea I wrote the words “Welcome to: Information & communication technology. I then drew some circuit board lines to make the banner look like a circuit board as I thought it would be an interesting idea however I didn’t use this idea because I really liked idea 3 and also I couldn’t think as to how I could develop this idea further.

Design: 5- for this design I wrote the words ” Welcome to Information & communication technology” and I then drew letters how they appear on a keyboard and darkened specific ones to make it look like their glowing and I tried to make them spell out “Welcome to Information & communication technology” but I don’t think the idea worked well and that’s why I didn’t use this idea as a banner idea.

Even though I chose design 3 as my chosen banner design I still developed the other initial banner designs.
